An Awkward Truth: The bombing of Darwin February 1942

by: Peter Grose
published by: Allen & Unwin

On 19 February, 1942, the same fleet of Japanese bombers that ten weeks earlier had attacked Pearl Harbour attacked Darwin Harbour. As Peter Grose points out in his introduction to ‘An Awkward Truth’, more bombs fell on Darwin than on Pearl Harbour, more ships were sunk in Darwin and more civilians were killed than in Pearl Harbour. The people of Darwin were unprepared and undefended and ran away because they did not know what else to do. Peter Grose tells the story of this day – the shame of the looting and chaos that followed; the bravery of the few soldiers and civilians who were left to defend our northern port.
