An Unlikely Leader: The life and times of Captain John Hunter

by: Robert Barnes
published by: Sydney University Press

The second governor of New South Wales, John Hunter, has remained a shadowy figure of early Australian colonial history. His solitary, career-driven life on land and at sea was tumultuous. From a talented mariner, he became the captain responsible for the devastating loss of the supply ship HMS Sirius in 17900, and then HMS Venerable in 1804. As governor of New South Wales between 1795 and 1800, he had a tough time making his mark and taking change, and eventually failed. On his return to England, he worked to regain his standing in society and retired as an esteemed Vice-Admiral. His diaries, drawings and maps remain important historical records of the founding of Australia.
