Australian Bats, Second Edition

by: Sue Churchill
published by: Allen & Unwin

Australia is often spoken of as a land of marsupials, yet roughly 25% of its mammals are bats, a placental mammal. Bats have been here a very long time; the earliest Australian bat fossils are around 54 million years old, only a little younger than the oldest known bat fossils. Bats sometimes played an important role in the oral traditions of Aboriginal people. Yet some species of bats, notably the Christmas Island pipistrelle, now are in danger of extinction.

Using the latest developments in bat research, Sue Churchill has completely revised her original work; describing the appearance, range and behaviour of Australia’s 77 species of bats.
