Blanche: An Australian Diary, 1856 - 1861

by: Blanche Mitchell
published by: Ted Sly

Fifteen year old Blanche Mitchell, the daughter of Sir Thomas Mitchell, Surveyor General of New South Wales, kept a journal from 1856 that reveals the life of a privileged, though cash-poor, family in Sydney. Her father had died the previous year from pneumonia, leaving a contested will, and his wife and seven surviving children in reduced circumstances.

Blanche writes about life in Sydney, relationships, parties, picnics, romantic yearnings and the many details of a young girl's life.

Published by Ted Sly, great-great grandson of Sir Thomas Mitchell, with notes by Edna Hickson, and illustrations by Jill Francis.
