Bushranging and the Policing of Rural Banditry in NSW, 1860 - 1880

by: Susan West
published by: Australian Scholarly PUblishing

The outbreak of bushranging in New South Wales in the 1860's gave rise to many legends, and a sharpening of the division between the landed ruling class and the disadvantaged rural working class. Susan West, a history lecturer at the University of Queensland, explores the circumstances that encouraged men to become bushrangers, how they were seen by society and how they saw themselves. The challenges they presented to the newly formed police force are explored through a revealing examination of police and government records.
