Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village
Information: Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village, which opened in 1975, is a living history museum with a significant collection of maritime artefacts and relics from some 180 shipwrecks, which occurred along the southwest Victoria coastline between 1850’s To 1920’s. The site, which is the only one of its type along the historic Great Ocean Road, is set in the historic precinct of two Warrnambool lighthouses, the lighthouse keepers’ cottage, the Chart Room and the fortification.

To complement the original buildings some additional 40 other authentic buildings, which were typical of 1870’s coastal whaling and fishing port, were constructed over 30 years ago.

The site also hosts a number of historical and community groups in the precinct. These include the Warrnambool Family History Group, the Warrnambool Genealogical Society, the Volunteer Coastguard, Friends of Flagstaff Hill Historical Interest Volunteers, and various historical craft groups including the Warrnambool Wool Spinners and Weavers, the Warrnambool Quilting and Sewing group and the Warrnambool Historical Model Boat Club.
Events: The spectacular ‘Shipwrecked’ Sound and Laser show held nightly from dusk tells the story of the sinking of the Loch Ard and the miraculous survival of teenagers Eva Carmichael and Tom Pearce.
