Parkes & District Historical Society Inc
Information: The Parkes and District Historical Society was formed in 1953. By 1967 it had collected 2000 items and opened a Museum that year. 1969 the Museum moved into new premises the Old Masonic Hall and it was opened and named Henry Parkes Museum by Sir Henry Parkes' son Cobden. In 1970 the Society opened its Antique Machinery Museum on Crown Land North of the Town, and called it Pioneer Park. The Society amalgamated both Museums in 1999 on the Pioneer Park site. The Society has 10,000 items in its collections mainly from Estates purchases and donations. Cobden Parkes gave the Society a number of Family items and we were given a Plaster Bust done by Abrahams in 1862. This Bust was purchased by a local business man who displayed in his Office when he closed his shop he gave it to the Historical Society. In our History and Research Section we have many items and information about Parkes Community. We have Maps, Cemetery Records and a very valuable Clothing, Photos, and Embroidery Collection. Our Furniture collection is also unusual and valuable with some interesting stories to go with them. The Antique Farm Machinery Collection. Our most valuable item is the "Rein Drive Tractor" the one and only in the world, the 100 year old Big Four Tractor and the unusual Mogul Tractor. Their about 25 other Tractors all in going condition , many old working Harvestors and many working stationary Engines. On site is the Silver City Carriage, and two small churches - 1896 Cooks Myalls and 1902 Coobang Church. The other very valuable building on site is Wongalea Schoool 100 years old this year . The film "Sunstruck" starring Harry Seccombe was filmed here. We hold several special Heritage and History events each year and a yearly Machine Start Up Day. Our Society owns all our collections and items. Some of the items form part of our Australian Heritage.
Events: Tractor start up days in April/October.
