Willunga Branch, National Trust of South Australia
Information: The Branch manages two Museums (the Willunga Slate Museum and the Willunga Courthouse Museum). It maintains and provides access to local and family history archives and also acts to preserve the built and natural heritage of the Willunga district.

The unique WILLUNGA SLATE MUSEUM in the old Stables building, was opened in November 2005. It tells of the discovery of slate in 1840, the methods of quarrying, the traditional skills and tools of the slate workers, the many uses of slate, the impact of the slate industry on the local community and the export of Willunga roofing slates to other areas of Australia.

The WILLUNGA SLATE TRAIL starts here. The Slate Trail brochure enables visitors to explore Wilunga’s back streets and churchyards, appreciate the many uses of slate, and see the quaint cottages of the quarrymen and the grander homes of the quarry owners.

The WILLUNGA COURTHOUSE MUSEUM is an authentic C19th Courtroom with jury & prisoner's boxes, cells and exercise yard. It is ideal for a courtroom re-enactment (available for groups). Family and district history records are available. It is in a picturesque setting with heritage-listed buildings, a self-guided walk in the nature reserve across the creek, picnic areas and toilets.

Opening Times: 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday and public holidays. Other times, and group tours, by arrangement.
Publications: 'The Tragic Shore : the wreck of the Star of Greece and a history of the Jetties of Port Willunga', by Geoffrey H Manning, 1988; 'The Willunga Slate Trail', 2006; 'Willunga Walks' by R Baxendale and F Lush, revised ed. 2006.
